Internship: Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta

My time in Honors Mentorship has been absolutely amazing. Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta could not have done a better job in helping me grow in ways I didn’t know I could. Not only was I able to be around children’s medicine, but I also learned several practical skills in the process. Through this journey I have found my strengths and weaknesses, and have been given the chance to improve on those certain skills. For example, when I was suddenly no longer on the schedule, I was able to efficiently work on communication skills with my mentors. Over time communicating with my mentors became very easy for me. I have also gained knowledge on how to approach various circumstances within the pediatric healthcare profession.

Since in the future I hope to become involved with pediatric medicine, this internship has prepared me in many ways. I have been given the opportunity to observe sports medicine, physical therapy, speech therapy, and occupational therapy. While observing the different specialties within pediatric medicine, it has cleared the air on what I enjoy and what I don’t enjoy as much. I have not only been given the opportunity to work hands on with patients, but I have been given the chance to witness day to day duties that range from writing patient notes, talking to parents, or planning the next patient’s session. After interning, I am confident to say I want to pursue pediatric medicine in my near future. I am grateful for this once in a lifetime experience, and I am thankful for these incredible mentors I am able to look up to.

For future Honors Mentorship students, I highly encourage to keep an open mind when starting your internship. I believe having an open mind and always being open to new experiences has made this journey more educational and beneficial. Which ever speciacility you chose for internship is not definite, and may change as more opportunities are given to you. You should always be engaged in whatever activity you are doing, and be involved with your mentor. Lastly, future Honors Mentorship students need to enjoy and make the most of their mentorship. It flies by, and you don’t want to miss out on any of it!
